I feel that answer is probably most correct for my son as he is a very active child and often plays all day in the summer with older children and may be straining himself a little or in the middle of a growth period. I just received a letter saying my doctor wont treat me anymore. I do not see him, as I merely go through his office to get medicine for my heart, they schedule a blood test and then I buy what is needed. I have no problemsd with this but now I`m "fired"!

Hi,
Doctors do have the legal right to end the patient-doctor relationship as long as they give the patient written notice allowing him/her enough time to find another doctor. They do not necessarily have to give a reason why they choose to do this. If they don`t give this written notice it constitutes abandonment. I`m not sure if I answered your question or not, but I hope this information helps. Good luck.

Is it common to give no reason? I have not seen the doctor in months and have had no problems with my relationship with him. I am on warfarin and just go when I;m told, for the test, take what I`m told to when they change the amount. Why would they drop me?

answer to second question

A Answer (11m 30s later) (August 15, 2009 04:27:21 PM PST) By Expert: NurseKT

Hi again,
Some reasons doctors drop patients include patients not paying bills in a regular manner, habitually missing appointments, not following medical advice, or the doctor no longer accepts the patient`s insurance or the patient no longer has insurance. Of course, he could choose to drop you for any reason. The doctor is not obligated to give a reason, but if your relationship has been fine I would call the office and ask why you are being dropped as a patient. I understand why it would not seem right to be dropped when there have not been any previous problems. The office manager may be able to tell you a specific reason. It may not have anything to do with you personally as a patient. With the state of healthcare these days it may have to do with reimbursement issues or the doctor`s desire to cut back. I think the best thing you can do is call the doctor`s office directly since it could be due to a number of reasons. By giving you notice to find another doctor he has legally fulfilled his obligation as a healthcare provider. I wish I could tell you something more definitive and I wish you luck with this situation.

The doctor is still responsible for your care even if he doesn`t see you. It could be he is limiting his practice to only patients he physically sees. Just a suggestion. I know it doesn`t seem fair. The same thing happened to a family member of mine and he never got an explanation.
