Will follow the advise given of total rest and continue the medication (though it`s hell on us ... part Border Collie ... bored and vocally expresses her displeasure a lot :-). Thanks for the assistance!" -- B.H.

Hi,
Can you see anything lodged in his paw or any type of cuts or injury?
Check is nails as well, when was the last time they were trimmed and by who?

beacuse I am being asked an obvious question and if I could answer this i probably wouldnt be asking in the first place

Hi,
Yes I understand it is an obvious question but I have to ask, as I Nor anyone else can not just assume a person already knows what to do.
The vet will ask you the same questions if you were to call one. They try to get some type of information as to what could have caused the dog an issue. This is called triage.
Since you can`t seem to find a cause.
Yes, you should take him to the Vet for evaluation.
I would say the pain is not excruciating painful enough to stop him from having a good time outside.
The possibles are ingrown nail, object lodged inside of the paw, even a problem located at the elbow.

thanks , apologies if the reply sounded a bit off hand , hes usually so healthy and now quite and definitely in pain , could i put something warm on it ? I cant get to the vet until after tmrw

ANSWER Answer (7m 17s later) (February 03, 2010 03:07:36 PM PST) By Expert: AnimalLover

Hi,
If he just started limping in this first 24 hours, you can use warm compresses to the entire paw and foot. Leave the warm compress on for 20 min and do this every 2 hours. You might start to see an area that looks red or inflamed after a few hours of this. As heat brings both infections and objects to the surface.
AFTER 24 hours use cold, and apply as directed above.
If you see NO improvement or you can see an area of injury (like an object) please bring him to his Vet for treatment.
If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask me,
If not please hit the accept button so I know I have answered your questions. Thank you and good luck.
